As the African Union declares 2025 the "Year of Reparations" under the theme "Advancing Justice through Reparations: Reparations, Restoration, and Renaissance," global attention is squarely on addressing historical injustices. African Futures Lab is proud to announce its participation in the Hybrid Conference: Justice through Reparations: African-Caribbean Dialogue, taking place at the University of Pretoria's Future Africa Campus in South Africa.
This two-day event, organized by leading academic institutions and civil society groups including the University of The Bahamas, the University of Pretoria, and the African Judges and Jurists Forum, will convene experts and stakeholders from across Africa and the Caribbean. It aims to deeply explore reparations for historical injustices and human rights violations stemming from slavery, colonialism, and other forms of exploitation against people of African descent.
African Futures Lab's Dr. Patrick Toussaint (external link), Climate Research and Policy Advisor, will contribute to this critical discourse, presenting online alongside Krishnee Appadoo (external link), Senior Lecturer at the University of Mauritius (in person). They will speak as part of a panel on "Reparations and health, the environment, and the climate." Their joint paper, titled "Climate reparations and the continuing legacies of colonial harm: developing a Pan-African research and policy agenda," directly addresses the core reality that the climate crisis is a racial justice crisis rooted in centuries of colonial exploitation and ongoing racialized harms. It advocates for a Pan-African research and policy agenda on climate reparations that brings these historical and structural dimensions to the foreground, actively confronting how global climate negotiations have sidelined historical responsibility and how existing African reparations efforts have often overlooked climate change.
The conference, which will feature around 40 papers and simultaneous English-French interpretation, is undertaken in partnership with CARICOM and the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, among other esteemed collaborators.
Their insights will be instrumental in advancing AfaLab’s strategic goal to reposition demands for climate justice and reparations from African populations at the center of international policies. We anticipate their joint presentation will meaningfully contribute to reclaiming African agency in global climate governance and resource debates.

African Futures Lab est fier d'annoncer sa participation à la conférence hybride : La justice par les réparations : Dialogue Afrique-Caraïbes, qui se tiendra au Future Africa Campus de l'Université de Pretoria, en Afrique du Sud.
Cet événement de deux jours, organisé par des institutions académiques de premier plan et des groupes de la société civile, notamment l'Université des Bahamas, l'Université de Pretoria et le Forum des juges et juristes africains, réunira des experts et des parties prenantes de toute l'Afrique et des Caraïbes. Il vise à explorer en profondeur les réparations pour les injustices historiques et les violations des droits de l'homme découlant de l'esclavage, du colonialisme et d'autres formes d'exploitation des personnes d'ascendance africaine.
Patrick Toussaint (external link), conseiller en recherche et politique climatique à l'African Futures Lab, contribuera à ce discours critique en faisant une présentation en ligne aux côtés de Krishnee Appadoo (external link), maître de conférences à l'Université de Maurice (en personne). Ils interviendront dans le cadre d'un panel sur « Les réparations et la santé, l'environnement et le climat ». Leur document commun, intitulé « Réparations climatiques et héritages persistants des préjudices coloniaux : élaboration d'un programme panafricain de recherche et de politique », aborde directement la réalité fondamentale selon laquelle la crise climatique est une crise de justice raciale enracinée dans des siècles d'exploitation coloniale et de préjudices raciaux persistants. Il plaide en faveur d'un programme panafricain de recherche et d'action sur les réparations climatiques qui mette ces dimensions historiques et structurelles au premier plan, en s'attaquant activement à la manière dont les négociations mondiales sur le climat ont mis de côté la responsabilité historique et à la manière dont les efforts de réparation africains existants ont souvent négligé le changement climatique.
La conférence, qui comprendra une quarantaine d'exposés et une interprétation simultanée anglais-français, est organisée en partenariat avec la CARICOM et le Forum permanent des Nations unies sur les personnes d'ascendance africaine, parmi d'autres collaborateurs estimés.
Leurs idées seront déterminantes pour faire avancer l'objectif stratégique d'AfaLab de repositionner les demandes de justice climatique et de réparations des populations africaines au centre des politiques internationales. Nous nous attendons à ce que leur présentation conjointe contribue de manière significative à la récupération de l'agence africaine dans la gouvernance climatique mondiale et les débats sur les ressources.
